Grassroots, Nilgiri Biosphere, Wayanad

With its fauna that includes over 100 species of mammals, 350 species of birds, 80 species of reptiles, 39 species of fish, 31 amphibians and 316 species of butterflies and flora offering 3300 species of flowering plants, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is truly a destination to vouch for. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is an International Biosphere Reserve perched in the Western Ghats and Nilgiri Hills Ranges in South India.

Having been declared a World Heritage Site by the UN in 2012, it includes Mudumalai, Mukurthi, Sathyamangalam, Nagarhole, Wayanad and Bandipur National parks.

Wayanad, a beautiful district is nestled in the North-East province of Kerala State which offers a sublime and truly esoteric feel at all times. Definitely a place to visit with family, Wayanad offers unbeatable memories that last a life time.

Aditya, a chef by profession and a 4th generation in Wayanad thought of a great way of putting his knowledge and expertise to best use by materialising his dream project Grassroots. This way he has been successful in sharing his in-depth knowledge of the terrain and its people. Aditya's passion lies in tea plantations, food, jazz, motorbikes and the surrounding wildlife.

Set in a coffee & spice plantation, overlooking Tea gardens, Grassroots has a river flowing below and beautiful mountains encompassing it. Grassroots offers an inventory of 5 luxury, Swiss Tents. Each of these tents offers a patio overlooking the greenery, a large cosy air-conditioned bedroom, accompanied with a mini fridge, coffee/Tea maker, and a television.  A luxuriantly large washroom, with hot water & modern fittings ensures that after a hard and busy day one gets to enjoy a nice hot shower to rejuvenate.

The resort offers its guests 4 wheel drives through thick rain forests, allowing them to enjoy a romantic meal at Eharie, the hill top. Also, here one gets to visit the 300 year old ancestral home where Mahatma Gandhi visited the forefathers of Aditya.

In addition, safaris on foot, romantic picnics and visit to Tribal colonies which have been in existence since generations are also arranged for guests. Once here, it is suggested to visit the cattle farms, 300 year old ancestral homes, spice plantations and also meet the labourers who have for generations looked after this land. This includes learning the local cuisine and checking out the history of early settlers and tribes.

A must visit for all is 'Gurukulam' the botanical haven of Wolfgang, the German settler who devoted more than 3 decades here for conservation of plants. Well known across for creating Noah's Ark for the Western Ghats, Wolfgang Theuerkauf passed away in November 2014. His contribution towards the preservation of plants along the Western Ghats would remain unmatched and etched in the echelons of history forever.

For the adventure lovers, Grassroots offers trekking through beautiful mountains which engulf one with sheer pleasure of enjoying solitude amidst the misty and mesmerizing jungle. A lazy afternoon on a bamboo raft or a typical Kerala boat further accentuates the bliss.

The time has arrived to pack the rucksack and leave for this mystically beautiful destination….!!!
