Mudpack therapy to keep Taj dome out of sight for a year

For the first time in the history of Taj Mahal, mud-pack therapy will be done on its main dome to remove yellowness from the white marble. According to Archaeological Survey of India officials, this process will take more than a year to complete. Iron scaffolding will be tied all around the dome for this purpose. The therapy will be carried out by the ASI's science branch which has sought a no objection certificated from its civil department. It has also sought a report from the engineering department on the load bearing capacity of the main structure as iron scaffolding is required to be tied round for carrying out the work. The cleaning of the main dome is the part of the conservation plan of the monument submitted to the Parliamentary standing committee on environment, which has raised serious objections over black and yellow spots on the marble surfaces, especially minarets.

A senior ASI official informed that the conservation work on three minarets out of four have been completed. This work will only after completion of the forth minaret. At present, therapy on the facade in going on. We will try and start the work by April next year." In the interim plan, the department, keeping in view the height of the dome and its special architectural features, had said it would first conduct technical studies in association with specialized institutions before starting the actual work. The deadline of March, 2018, has been fixed for this in the interim plan.
